Manchester City Thrash Luton Town 6-2 in Dominant Display

Haaland and De Bruyne Shine as City Secure Comfortable Victory

Match Report: Manchester City vs Luton Town, English Premier League

Manchester City made a resounding statement in their first match of the 2023-24 English Premier League season, thrashing Luton Town 6-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Summer signing Erling Haaland announced his arrival in the Premier League with a first-half brace, while Kevin De Bruyne added two more and Julián Álvarez, who scored in the FA Community Shield victory over Liverpool, grabbed another. Riyad Mahrez also marked his return to the team with a trademark free-kick goal.

For Luton Town, who were promoted to the top flight for the first time in 12 years, Carlton Morris and Amari'i Bell managed to find the back of the net, but it was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat.

Manchester City, with their star-studded lineup, controlled the game from the outset and took the lead after just 18 minutes. De Bruyne's inch-perfect cross found Haaland, who headed home with aplomb. The Norwegian striker doubled his tally just four minutes later, this time tapping in from close range after a mazy run from Phil Foden.

Despite Luton Town's spirited efforts, they were unable to contain Manchester City's attacking prowess. Mahrez extended the lead with a stunning free-kick before halftime, curling the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out.

After the break, Haaland missed a golden opportunity to claim his hat-trick, but Álvarez made no mistake with a clinical finish to make it 4-0. De Bruyne's second goal came from close range after a clever lay-off from Haaland.

Luton Town managed to pull two goals back through Morris and Bell, but it was merely a consolation on a disappointing day for the newly promoted side.

The victory sees Manchester City surge to the top of the Premier League table after matchday one, while Luton Town languish at the bottom with a -4 goal difference.
