LSU Athletic Officials Announce Groundbreaking for New Track and Field Stadium

Baton Rouge, LA -

LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward and head track and field coach Dennis Shaver announced plans for a new $50 million facility dedicated to the university's track and field program. Groundbreaking for the stadium is set for early 2024, with an anticipated completion date of fall 2025. The state-of-the-art facility will replace the current Bernie Moore Track Stadium, which has served as the home of LSU track and field since 1990.

Features of the New Stadium

According to Woodward, the new stadium will feature a nine-lane Mondo Super X track, which is the same surface used at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The facility will also include a 400-meter warm-up, a throwing area, and a landing zone for jumping events. The grandstand will have seating for 5,000 fans, including premium club seats and loge boxes.

The stadium will also feature a two-story building that will house locker rooms, training facilities, a weight room, and a sports medicine center. The building will also include a Hall of Fame to honor the history of LSU track and field, which boasts 40 NCAA team championships and 144 individual NCAA titles.

Benefits of the New Stadium

Shaver said the new stadium will provide a much-needed upgrade for the LSU track and field program. "This facility will allow us to recruit and retain the best student-athletes in the country," Shaver said. "It will also give our student-athletes the resources they need to be successful in the classroom and on the track."

Woodward said the new stadium is part of LSU's commitment to excellence in athletics. "We want to provide our student-athletes with the best possible facilities and resources," Woodward said. "This new stadium will help us achieve that goal."

Additional Information

The funding for the new stadium will come from a combination of private donations and university funds. The stadium will be located on the west side of campus, adjacent to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The stadium will be designed by the architectural firm Populous, which has designed numerous other sports facilities, including the new Yankee Stadium and the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.

The groundbreaking for the new stadium is scheduled for February 2024. The stadium is expected to be completed by fall 2025.
